How to Win a Local Election

Well, this might be some great 'reminders' for all candidates in the upcoming election ~ Malaysian election~maybe...

Winning a local election often takes months, or at least a year, of hard work. The work starts long before you shake your first hand or make your first campaign speech. You must decide what issues to emphasize; to better your chances of winning, select issues popular with the electorate. Meet all deadlines and regulations. You don't want to lose an election because you filed papers a day late or because you are embroiled in a scandal for forgetting to report campaign contributions.

1
List why you are running for election. You must be able to articulate your vision if you are going to win. Think about why you are the best candidate and what sets you apart. Also list your traits, strengths and weaknesses. If you have any personal issues that might hurt you, such as unpaid tax bills or a divorce because you were cheating, plan for that issue in case it becomes an issue. A big part of your plan should be refocusing the campaign on political, not personal, issues. If the issue is huge enough, address it up front rather than wait for it to emerge.

2
Write a campaign plan. Include your platform, which is a summary of the issues you will campaign on. How many issues depends on what office you are running for and the size of your locality, but you should have at least three. Also, visualize how you see the office and the locality in the long run. Write how you would like the situation to be when you leave office and your plan to get to that point.

3
Prepare a campaign budget, either yourself or with the person you appointed to oversee accounting and fundraising. Many successful campaigns, no matter how small their scale, require money. Take out any necessary preliminary loans and begin fundraising by showing your campaign plan to potential donors. Hold fundraising events.

4
Study the issues inside and out, and have answers ready for the opposing side of the issue. For example, if you are running for a school board seat and you oppose school uniforms, be aware of arguments the other side will present and how to address these arguments.

5
Know your opponents' strengths and weaknesses. If you know one opponent is weak on a particular issue, you can emphasize that.

6
Build a solid campaign team. Enlist your family and friends, although for the most part, avoid asking co-workers for their support. Keep politics out of your workplace. You save time and effort if you select someone else, rather than you, to be campaign manager. If your candidacy is low-key, though, such as a school board seat, you might be fine acting as your own campaign manager.

7
Practice your speeches and your interviews. Take speech classes if necessary. You want a clear, strong, friendly speaking voice. Run your speeches by other people with a focus on clarity, relevancy to the issues and your likeability.

8
Clear your schedule as much as possible and get to know the media. Get speaking engagements at civic clubs and do media and blogger interviews. Go out into the community. Attend town hall meetings and go door to door. Get online. Build a campaign website and a presence on social network sites. Encourage commentary and discussion of issues. Weigh in on citizens' comments so they feel they are getting personal attention from you.

9
Find other ways to reach voters. You're getting out into the community, and you have an online presence, but that might not be enough. You might want to do postcard mailings, yard signs, TV and radio advertising, and word-of-mouth.

10
Check in about once a week on how your efforts are paying off. If funds allow, you could hire an organization to do a poll. Otherwise, people in your campaign can ask voters what they think of you, if they would vote for you, and why or why not. Refine your strategy accordingly.

11
Go all out as much as possible in the week running up to election day. Work as many hours as possible and reach as many voters as you can. However, do not work so hard that you are fatigued and stumble mentally.

*Already registered as Malaysian voters?? If you are 21 year old or above, then take action now! The future is in our hands. REGISTER!

How to Deal With Female Bullying

Another great tips to be learn. Female! this is a must for you. Female bullies are just as cruel as male bullies, and dealing with them is often more difficult without a plan in place. Each situation is different, but each can typically be handled in a similar way. Changes aren't going to happen overnight, but standing your ground and staying strong can help you get through it. Don't handle the problem on your own -- dealing with the bullies involves action on your part as well as help from others.

1
Talk instead of staying silent. Female bullies don't expect their victims to respond, and once the person does, it can take away a bit of their power. Screaming back may only encourage the bully, so instead, have a private conversation with her. Explain how you don't appreciate the way she's been acting, that if there's some type of problem, you would rather talk to her about it than let it continue, and that it would be better for both of you if the issue was just settled.

2
Identify with the bully. Most people likely see only what the bully is doing and not why she's doing it. Many bullies have actually been bullied themselves at some point. Quite a few are covering up their own pain and insecurities and taking it out on others just to make themselves feel as though they have some power; it's a defense mechanism. Rather than hate the bully, do what you can to realize that it's not you that is the cause of their harassment, it's a personal problem caused by something you have nothing to do with.

3
Avoid getting emotional about the situation. Female bullies don't just feed off the silence of their victims, they also feed off the emotional responses. If you cry or break down in front of the person, they'll feel as though they have a power over you. Hold your ground, don't cry or break down, and you'll take away some of their power.

4
Save any correspondence from the bully. Female bullies typically confront face-to-face rather than by non-verbal means such as texts, email or instant message. However, should you receive any notes, emails, messages ,or texts, save them where they won't get lost or deleted. You'll be able to show proof of the harassment should it come down to it.

5
Develop a strong support system. There is nothing more important, and the larger and stronger that system is, the better and more confident you'll feel. Whether the bullying takes place at school, work or elsewhere, have friends there that will back you up. It's also helpful to have others to talk to who don't know the bully -- they can give you an outsider's perspective.

6
Talk to a counselor when problems first start. A professional is able to provide an objective opinion, allowing you to vent without worrying that the trust is broken. Whatever you say will also be a record of what went on between yourself and the bully.

Secret Shopper Tips | Be a secret shopper now an get paid

A "secret shopper" (or "mystery shopper") is an anonymous consumer who is paid by a company to shop at their establishment and provide feedback. A mystery shopper can be assigned to evaluate retail stores, restaurants, or hotels -- anywhere people spend money. While it may seem like a dream job to some, there is a definite responsibility that goes with this line of work. Mystery shoppers are often tasked with rating customer service and product offerings.

Be Professional
Professionalism is a must in all lines of work, but especially in mystery shopping, as you are providing a company with a direct line to how they can improve their business. Do not accept jobs you are unable to fulfill, and if you are unable to complete the job make sure you notify your scheduler as soon as possible. After completing a job, make sure you fill out all paperwork in a timely manner.

Be Discreet
The purpose of the mystery shopper is to provide information from the point of view of a normal customer. When you go to complete a job, do not bring forms or paperwork with you to the store. Make sure you blend in with the other shoppers and do not draw attention to yourself. If a store knows you are a mystery shopper, you will not be given "regular" service, so staying anonymous is a must in order to provide helpful comments to your employer.

Be Thorough
When filling out your reports make sure they are as detailed as possible. Companies will often want to know names of employees, how long before you were greeted, products on display, whether or not the employee did any suggestive selling, was friendly, etc. Make sure your report includes any pertinent information so any glitches in products or services are fixed in a timely fashion. Without honest input nothing that needs fixing will be changed.

Have Fun
Being a mystery shopper is fun, so enjoy the experience! You will literally be paid to shop -- something most of us only dream of -- so take full advantage of that experience. While the job is demanding, it is also rewarding to know you are making positive changes to a company's performance, and you can earn some extra money while enjoying new shops and restaurants.  (Source: by Danielle Hill of eHow.com )

The Best Ways to Stop Smoking Cigarettes

Desperate to quit smooking? then, this is for you. Quitting smoking is a difficult challenge for many people. The health benefits of quitting smoking are well known, but that does not make it any easier. A number of techniques have been developed to help those addicted to nicotine make the transition to a smoke free lifestyle. It may take a few attempts to find the solution that will work for you.

Nicotine Replacement
Nicotine replacement patches and products are used to slowly wean you from cigarettes. Nicotine is the addictive drug in cigarettes that keeps you smoking even though you know it is not healthy. Getting your nicotine from other sources eliminates the addictive cravings that you have for cigarettes. Nicotine replacement is not the final answer, but it is a step in the right direction.

Follow the directions carefully for your nicotine replacement method and step down your nicotine use. Replacements can be dangerous if you continue to smoke while getting nicotine from other sources. Using less and less nicotine will bring you to a state where your body no longer craves the drug.

Cold Turkey
Cold turkey is a method of quitting smoking that some people find to be the best approach. When you quit cold turkey, you do not use any nicotine replacement products or wean yourself off of cigarettes slowly. This method is very difficult and is not for everyone. If you plan to give up cigarettes cold turkey, you should have a plan in place for support and activities to help you get through the difficult days.

Expect that the next few weeks are going to be difficult. Keep yourself busy to take your mind off cigarettes and the withdrawal you are experiencing.

Quitting Strategies
Use the tips and tricks that others have used to give up cigarettes successfully. You may find some gems among all of these tips that will help you through this challenging task. Set a date on the calendar and begin preparing for your new smoke free life.

Keep track of the money that you will be saving by not smoking. Figure out how much money you would save each day and then each hour that you do not smoke. Add it up as you go along smoke free. The financial benefit is only one of the many positive aspects of quitting smoking, but it is a benefit that you will be able to see immediately.

Give yourself a reward for one-month smoke free. Take all of the money that you would have spent on cigarettes during that month and buy yourself something special.

Look online for support groups for former smokers. Talking about your feelings with others who are going through the same thing can help give you the motivation that you need to stick with your plan.

How to Get Teenagers Out of Bed | Family matters

Haha..another problem that always make the parents knocking thier head. One thing teenagers seem to do universally well is sleep in. Waking them up can seem as risky as disturbing a hibernating bear. If your teen refuses to get up in the morning, the pattern is not necessarily unbreakable. There are a variety of approaches you can take to correct the behavior and its underlying causes. You might never turn your teen into a morning person, but you can make sure he gets to school on time.

1
Set a timetable for homework after school. Sleeping in can be caused by a teenager staying up late to complete assignments. Make sure you teenager comes home and does a couple of hours of homework before dinner. Have him finish the remainder immediately after dinner. Offer to help your teen with his homework, which will enable you to make sure he completes it on time.

2
Make sure your teenager gets to bed at a decent hour. If your teenager has to wake up at 7 a.m., she should be in bed by 10 or 11 p.m. the night before. Negotiate with your teen to come up with an appropriate regular bedtime that works for both of you.

3
Place an alarm clock somewhere where your teen cannot hit the snooze button over and over again. Put it across the room so your teenager has to stand up in the morning to turn it off. Turn the thermostat a few degrees colder in the morning to help your teen wake up when he gets out of bed.

4
Keep a relatively similar schedule on the weekends for your teenager. She will have trouble waking up early on a Saturday or Sunday, but keeping the routine going will help preserve it for weekdays.

Hope this tips can help you to know how to get your teens out of their bed.

How to Help a Child With Low Self-Esteem Feel Better About Himself

Low self esteem? Ouch..that's could be heart tortured. It can be painful to watch a child struggle with low self-esteem. Most parents foster self-confidence in their children through love and by teaching them the skills they will need to face life's many trials. But often that can be as challenging to a parent as to the child with self-esteem issues. Developing a strong sense of self-worth is a lifetime process that each child approaches differently at different stages of development.

Self-esteem
Self-esteem is the feeling of self-worth and confidence your child develops from infancy through adulthood. It is an ongoing process throughout your child’s life. It begins with the attachments made between you and your baby and the feeling of security and trust that is developed through nurturing. As your child grows, self-esteem develops from a feeling of love and acceptance by the family unit and the people he admires and looks up to. The ability for him to function adequately in the group fosters this acceptance.

Parents' Role in Building Self-Esteem
You can contribute to the building of your child’s self-esteem by recognizing that the two key components of self-esteem are feeling loved and capable. Help him cope with defeats and stressors instead of pointing out successes. During a crisis, let him know that you love and support him. Let your child hear you talk about your ups and downs and how you handle them. Children learn by example and need to know that life’s challenges are normal. Respect your child’s right to make his own decisions as he gets older, and respect his space and possessions. You can also provide opportunities for your child to excel in areas of special talents, and always show love with words and hugs.

Coping with Peers
Giving your child a healthy sense of self-esteem will help prepare him for interacting with his peers. It is normal for him to be easily hurt by peer criticism, whether real or perceived. Acceptance at school is important to children, and enlisting his teachers’ help in fostering sound peer relationships may go a long way in developing self-worth. It is not unusual for your child to feel confident at home, yet uncomfortable at school. It’s important to stress that even though he may not feel accepted at school, he is loved and supported at home. Keep the communication flowing and be clear about the values your family deems important.

When Low Self-esteem is Healthy
On occasion, low self-esteem may be healthy, especially when your child commits an action that is morally unacceptable. Feeling bad or guilty for stealing, bullying or being nasty to a sibling is a beneficial response that can lead to introspection and making amends. The act of confessing guilt, apologizing and taking responsibility for actions can further build upon his sense of self-esteem.

The Extinction of "Thank You"

This is according to a research in United Kingdom. It is considered one of the basics of politeness, but saying "thank you" may be dying out, according to new research. Rather than failing to show gratitude, however, we are simply using other words. In fact, one in three people say they usually use another word to express gratitude.

Among the most popular phrases were the less formal “ta” and “cool” as well as the French word “merci”. Although the average Briton still says thank you up to 5,000 times a year, the results indicate an increasingly casual way of speaking, with 40 per cent believing they use “thank you” less than previous generations. The poll by television channel Food Network UK to coincide with the launch of Thank You Day also showed that one in 20 said “nice one” instead.

But 95 per cent still believe good manners are important and eight in 10 Britons say they are polite. Nick Thorogood, the managing director of Food Network, said: “This highlights that taking the time and effort to say thanks is still very important to us. People will always find the way that works best for them.”

[HEALTH] Happier people live longer lives, true or false?

Yup, Older people live longer if they are happier, according to new research into the importance of emotional wellbeing.

A study of 3,800 people aged 52 to 79 found that those who rated their happiness the highest were significantly less likely to die in the following five years than those who were least content. Even after taking into effect the impact of age, disease and lifestyle factors on people's happiness, researchers found that the happiest group had a 35 per cent lower risk of death than the least happy. Although the results do not prove whether happiness actually causes longer life, they back up previous research which links wellbeing and a positive outlook to longer life. Prof Andrew Steptoe, who led the study, said: "The happiness could be a marker of some other aspect of people's lives which is particularly important for health.

"For example, happiness is quite strongly linked to good social relationships, and maybe it is things like that that are accounting for the link between happiness and health."

While previous studies have asked participants to rate their happiness over a specific time period – the past month, for example – the latest survey assessed people's mood at four points on a particular day. This reduced the risk that people's memories of how happy they had been would differ from reality and confound the results, the team from University College, London said. Happiness was measured using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), in which participants were asked to give themselves a mark from one to five in several categories. Positive affect – the measure used to designate how happy they were overall – was taken as a combination of people's self-reported scores for happiness, excitement and contentment.
Participants were also asked to assess their levels of worry, anxiety and fear, but after controlling for conditions such as depression the researchers found no connection between these negative feelings and a shorter lifespan. Prof Steptoe explained: "On a five point scale you could feel four points happy and two points worried at the same time. It is not a single dimension you are looking at, it is much more complicated than that." Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, the researchers reported that five years on from their assessment, just 3.6 per cent of the happiest participants – those who had the highest positive affect – had died.

In contrast, some 4.6 per cent of those who were averagely happy and 7.3 per cent of the group with the lowest positive affect had died during the same time frame. After accounting for factors including depression, physical health and wealth, the researchers found that the happiest people were more than a third less likely to die. Dr Ros Altmann, director general of Saga, said: "This study certainly fits in with our philosophy which is that if you want to have a happy and fulfilling life then you will benefit from it.

"We do believe that there is a definite connection between happiness and longevity and this is yet another study that upholds that link." Source: The Telegraph

How to Meet Girls Confidently

If you're a shy guy, meeting new people can be intimidating and overwhelming. Meeting members of the opposite sex can be even more frightening, especially if you want to impress them. Many women appreciate men who have sensitive sides to their personalities, but you still have to present yourself with confidence to capture their attentions. In addition to simply building your self-esteem, there are several easy ways that you can appear more confident when meeting girls.

1. Stand up straight. Girls pick up on non-verbal cues from your body language, so don't slouch and keep your hands stuffed in your pockets. Use good posture, look up instead of at the floor, and use your hands to naturally make gestures when you speak instead of hiding them.

2. Keep a smile on your face. Girls respond to positive people, and confident people tend to be positive. Smile, nod in agreement, and laugh at appropriate times during a conversation. If you appear to be happy, she will know that you are happy because you are talking to her. If you're frowning or seem anxious or overly nervous, she may wonder what about her is causing you to act that way.

3. Maintain eye contact during the entire conversation. Don't look down at the ground, stare at your hands, or look to the side or behind her. If you do, she may think you're not focused on the conversation or are not interested in her. Don't maintain eye contact for so long that you creep her out, though -- it's OK to look down or away for a brief moment.

4. Communicate using direct language. If you want to ask her to dance, introduce yourself and ask, "Would you like to dance?" Don't engage her in a long conversation because you're too nervous to ask her for what you want. She won't understand why you're droning on and on. If she says no, accept her refusal politely. Say "OK" and then excuse yourself. Continuing to try to get her to dance with you will make you appear needy and desperate.

Hello! The disabled have sexual needs, too

Kota Kinabalu: People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) have the same sexual needs or feelings as normal individuals.
"It is also untrue to say that people with IDD have more sexual feelings or needs compared to normal people," said Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology, Dr Elizabeth Daniel from India.
The Consultant Clinical Psychologist dispelled the myths in a quiz at the Parents Workshop on Sexuality Among Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) at the ongoing International Conference on Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities 2011 which ends today (Wednesday).
The workshop at UMS was also attended by health professionals and social workers. Dr Elizabeth, who is currently with UMS School of Psychology and Social Work, also asked:
"Is it bad for persons with IDD to express their sexual feelings or needs?
Must we stop it? If those with IDD do indulge in sexual acts, must they be punished?" The answers are "No" because punishing them is not a solution.

The workshop also cleared three other misconceptions :
1. Persons with IDD have poor knowledge and understanding so it does not matter if they watch movies or videos with sexual content. (False)

2. Persons with IDD have poor knowledge and understanding so it does not matter if adults, dress or behave in sexually provocative ways and show sexually inappropriate behaviour in front of them. (False)

3. It is all right for parents of persons with IDD to take care of their physical needs and infantilise them, even when they are teenagers and can be trained to be independent. (False)

Dr Elizabeth, who has 22 years of teaching and clinical experience, advised parents of IDD children to be extremely careful how they behave.

'Your time is yours'.

4. Pergilah Bercuti.
