KUALA LUMPUR: The formation of crime prevention clubs in schools is among efforts to reduce disciplinary misconduct among students and to encourage teenagers to be more alert on crime prevention.
Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said this was also important to shape their understanding of law enforcement in the context of creating a peaceful and harmonious society.
"As parents and members of the public, we must realise that the lives of teenagers do not lack challenges from modernisation and development.
"Therefore, these crime prevention clubs are seen as important in guiding and helping teenagers face such challenges," he told reporters after launching a seminar organised by the Kuala Lumpur MCPF on "The Role of Crime Prevention Clubs in Fighting Crime in Schools", here.
Based on statistics from Bukit Aman, the number of students involved in crime last year was 1,610 or 0.9 per cent, from the crime index registered nationwide.
He said among the crime involving students were seven cases of murder, rape (250 cases), causing injury (146), theft (346) and motorcycle theft (499).
"A total of 2,844 students were detained for various offences, of whom 1,646 were aged 16 to 18, and 1,089 aged 13 to 15," he said.
Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Datuk Amar Singh said the creation of such clubs in schools was timely and apt.
"We need serious attention from various quarters, especially parents and educators, so that students do not get involved in such activities," he added.
