KOTA KINABALU: A new-born baby was given an emotional send-off home from staff and well-wishers at an aero company airfield yesterday. For proud mum Ruslina Puyut only delivered her son safely at the aerodrome after a life-saving 180km mercy dash by helicopter from her home village. The Flying Doctor Service was called out after complications when Ruslina went into labour – with no local midwives on hand to help in the village. A helicopter was scrambled from the Layang-Layang Aerospace Sdn Bhd airfield here carrying an emergency doctor and nurse. Weather conditions were fine to begin on the one hour and 10 minutes flight, but chopper pilot Captain Thein Tun flew into heavy rain on the approach to the mother’s remote village home near Kota Marudu. Thein found he couldn’t put down because the local helipad was flooded by rising water levels, and a makeshift landing site had to be hastily constructed.

“The villagers had made a clearing that was safe for the helicopter to land or else she (Ruslina) would have to walk eight hours to town to seek help while in labour,” he said. After overcoming the first hurdle, the rescue chopper picked up Ruslina, 21, and her 28-year-old husband, Cladis Masuti, for the fraught flight back to KK with the mother in labour.Pilot Thein touched down safely with only moments to spare. Within minutes of landing at Layang-Layang Aerospace aerodrome, Ruslina gave birth. But the drama wasn’t over.FDS doctor-in-charge Dr Nelbon Giloi said the baby had been in the wrong position during the contraction phase of delivery and urgent medical intervention was needed.
“After the baby was born, he was unresponsive. There was no spontaneous breathing, crying and the baby was, in layman terms, blue-ish, due to the lack of oxygen,” Dr Giloi told reporters here yesterday.

Refleksi:
Betul la kata Shakespere "we all are the actor/actress and life is the stage" tu. Thanks for those who were involved in this case and may God Bless you all. Keep up a good work!!
