Major Functions of local health departments have included the following programs:-
1.Environmental sanitation surveillance
2.School health & immunization programs
3.Maternal & child health care
4.Limited care for indigent patients
5.Disease screening & control program such as TB.
Specific functions of Social Worker in Public Health (community):-
1
A social worker participates with other team members in case finding & planning outreach services to patients in such program & maternal & child health, family planning, early screening, alcoholism, & mental health.

A social worker provides direct preventive casework services to patients & families served by the agency, including home health care community support services when appropriate.
3
Social workers function as discussion leaders or organizers of client or patient groups in promoting health education activities.

A social worker functions in a planning or advocacy role with other providers or consumers in comprehensive community health projects.

A social worker provides case or program consultation (individually or as part of a team) to other staff members regarding psychosocial & community factors affecting patients & their utilization of health services.

A social worker participates with other staff in establishing policies & procedures for implementation of innovative service delivery projects.
7
A social worker works with community & consumers groups in assessing social & health needs.

A social worker participates in research & evaluation studies.
9
A social worker participates in training & staff development of professional personnel.
