FIRE-fighters had to make a dramatic rescue after a terrified youngster got trapped in a metal bunk bed at her Inverness home.
The emergency services rushed to the scene after the seven-year-old Shinead Hutchison's right leg got caught in the frame of her top bunk at her home at Cauldeen Road in Hilton.
Her mum Kelly (33) told how she was sent into blind panic trying to free her daughter Shinead during the drama.
The nightmare unfolded at around 8pm on Sunday night as the family were preparing the bedroom for re-decoration.
Paramedics even tried in vain to use washing up liquid to release the girl, but fire-fighters had to step in when those attempts failed.
She said: "Although she is fine, we can almost laugh at it now but at the time it was scary."
She explained: "We were in the middle of taking toys out of the room Shinead shares with her sister Kirstin (6) as we were decorating.
"Her older sister Abigail (9) took the mattress off Shinead's top bunk bed and Shinead then started running across the top bunk. But she fell and her leg got jammed just above the knee. She started screaming because of the pain in her leg.
"Myself and my nephew Josh Jane (11) tried to separate the bars to get her leg out but because it is thick metal we couldn't get them apart.
"Shinead was still crying and I was panicky so I phoned the fire brigade."
Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service received the call at 8.09pm, and raised the alarm with the ambulance service.
Kelly went on: "The ambulance arrived first and the two paramedics tried washing up liquid on her leg but that didn't help.
"Four fire-fighters came in and one of them got up on the bed with Shinead, another one was underneath holding her leg still, another was at her head and the ambulance man went behind Shinead and altogether they eased the bars apart and eased her leg out."
She and Shinead, who is in primary three at Cauldeen Primary, breathed a sigh of relief when she was eventually let loose.
Kelly, whose other children are Courtney (13) and Amber (2), added: "When I saw Shinead's leg at first I didn't know whether we would get the bars off or if she would need hospital treatment, but we were lucky they got her out and she could stay at home although they advised us to put ice packs on the leg and watch her leg.
"At first her leg was quite stiff but when she got up on Monday morning, she was bouncing about as normal and apart from a few small marks on her leg, she is fine.
"I told her she had been a silly little girl, but we're glad she's OK and are thankful to the ambulance and fire services as it could have been more serious."
When asked what Shinead thought of the drama, she simply replied: "It was scary!"
The fire service's area manager Scott Hay said they were pleased they were able to rescue her.
He said: "Whilst this was certainly an unusual incident to be called out to, our crews are trained in all aspects of emergency response and rescue, so were able to free the trapped girl quickly. We were pleased to be able to assist at what must have been a stressful time for the young girl and her family."
Refleksi:
"Malang tidak berbau"..walaupun kita merasakan bahawa sesuatu tempat itu adalah selamat, namun kita tidak boleh menjangkakan apa yang akan berlaku. Teringat pula dengan kes budak lelaki yang maut sebab terjerut leher ketika bermain dengan langsir tingkap yang berlaku di Penang baru-baru ini. Haih!!..memang tak disangka-sangka.
