Sleep and Weight Loss - Is There a Connection?

By Pattie Pilling of Skinny and Fabulous

Are you getting enough sleep? Are you gaining weight? Can there be a connection between sleep and weight loss? There are several reasons why you need to have the proper sleep in order for you to have the weight loss that you so desire. In other articles I talk at length of how adequate sleep promotes weight loss. Today I will be discussing how you can get that appropriate sleep.

Get enough sleep to lose weight
Getting into a routine is one of the biggest reasons that you may be getting into problems with your sleep. You need to a set routine. Think of how parents prepare for their children to go to bed. When my children were younger I would have a special process that we would go through. It helped both child and me to settle and feel ready for bed. I noticed that when that routine was broken that it was harder to get the kids to bed and it took longer for them to go to sleep. You are exactly the same. Your mind likes structure. When we follow a routine your mind knows in advance and prepares for the activity. In this case, it prepares to know that it is winding down for sleep. Get into a routine. Don't any electronic things one hour prior to bed. Read, clean up, and listen to something relaxing.

Make it a practice never work, excersise, clean house or anything that gets your adrenaline pumping just before bedtime. This should be a time of relaxing and winding down. Always go to bed within an hour of your normal retiring time, even on the weekends. This means that if your normal time to go to bed is 10 pm then do not go to bed any later than 11pm even on the weekends. You body likes the rhythm of routine. You will find by doing this one act that you will feel more rested.

As with going to bed the opposite is also true. Arise in the morning within the same hour daily. When we do this, again our body does can feel the best it can. This will help you make better choices during the day. Don't oversleep. This can be as harmful as a lack of sleep. We all know how it feels when we wake up and then choose to go back to sleep when it isn't necessary. We feel groggy and unmotivated. Hmm, interesting. It is the same with lack of sleep? I believe there is a deffinate connection between sleep and weight loss. Food for thought.
