The Best Diet for Skin

Skin, the largest organ in the human body, is constantly exposed to both internal and external factors that affect its condition. The skin acts as a shield, protecting our bodies from external harm such as radiation, germs and bacteria. The foods we eat have a significant effect on skin's appearance, so it's important to consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains to keep our skin vibrant and healthy.

Vitamins and Nutrients for Healthy Skin
According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, skin is an essential part of the immune system and plays a pivotal role in the feeling of well-being. Skin functioning and attractiveness are dependent on nutrition. In recent years, scientists have developed new insights into the relation between food intake and skin health.

Research shows that consuming a diet rich in antioxidants prevent free radicals from entering the body, protecting against inflammation (including UV rays). Consuming foods containing essential fatty acids (such as omega-3), help keep skin smooth and prevent acne. Additionally, foods rich in vitamin C promote collagen production, which helps prevent wrinkles.

Good-for-skin foods include fruits, especially cherries, berries, melons, apples and pears; vegetables, especially spinach and other green leafy vegetables, eggplant, asparagus, celery and onions; legumes, especially broad and lima beans; fish, especially salmon; nuts, especially almonds and walnuts; and olive oil.

Water also plays an important role in keeping skin healthy and hydrated. Drinking water will help flush toxins out of the body and give skin a smooth texture and appearance.

Foods to Avoid
Avoid foods and drinks containing caffeine, such as coffee, tea and chocolate, which can cause sallow, dry skin or acne. A high intake of meat and full-fat milk can increase the risk of skin wrinkling; opt for fish and low-fat dairy instead. If you have a sweet tooth, it's best to skip the sugary snacks and choose fruit instead. The spike in blood sugar levels contributes to the breakdown of collagen, making skin less resilient.

Conclusion
By feeding your body the right combination of nutrients, and knowing what to avoid, you can improve your skin's overall appearance and enable it to function better--for a healthier, happier you.
